Backend Engineer, Source Code Experience (Ruby + GraphQL) — GitLab, Remote Canada
The Opportunity
GitLab's Source Code Experience team (within the Create stage) builds the everyday source code workflows that developers live in: making them clear, reliable, and efficient across millions of projects. As AI agents increasingly write and manage code alongside people, you'll build backend capabilities that support trustworthy collaboration between humans and agents.
This is one of GitLab's oldest and most complex product areas — the systems here serve GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated.
What You'll Build
- Secure, well-tested, performant features using Ruby and GraphQL
- Backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic that power intuitive source code workflows
- Reliability work: performance tuning, SQL optimization, caching, rate limiting, observability, and resiliency
- Agent-aware guardrails so AI-generated code stays safe and reviewable
What You'll Do
- Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clean solutions
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Security, UX Research, Gitaly, Code Review, and other Source Code teams
- Use AI agents for well-scoped work — and critically review their output
- Maintain a high bar for quality in a critical, high-traffic product area
What You Bring
- Strong Ruby on Rails / backend experience; GraphQL familiarity is a plus
- Comfort in a complex codebase with real reliability responsibilities
- Excellent async communication — GitLab is fully remote, handbook-first
Why GitLab
Work from anywhere in Canada on infrastructure that 50 million people touch daily. You'll get experienced teammates, a culture that treats AI as a core multiplier, and the chance to shape how the world's developers work — with support from people who've been there.
