Backend Engineer, Repository Management (Ruby + GraphQL) — GitLab, Remote UK

What You'll Work On
The Repository Management team lives within GitLab's Source Code stage — one of the oldest and most complex product areas in the company. You'll help customers configure repositories with confidence so their GitLab projects support the way their teams actually work.
This is a critical system serving GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. Source Code provides the interface layer, through Gitaly, to the Git repositories that account for a large portion of GitLab's traffic.
What You'll Do
- Develop secure, well-tested, performant features using Ruby and GraphQL
- Turn complex policy and repository-management requirements into reliable backend solutions
- Work through legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while protecting reliability
- Tune performance, caching, rate limiting, observability, and resiliency
- Use AI agents for well-scoped work when they speed up delivery — GitLab treats AI as a core productivity multiplier
What You Bring
- Solid Ruby on Rails / backend experience; GraphQL exposure is a plus
- A reliability-first mindset and comfort with high-traffic systems
