Intermediate Backend Engineer, Platform Readiness — GitLab (Remote US/Canada) — Build AI Agents for Multi-Platform Shipping
The Problem Being Solved
GitLab features must ship successfully across four distinct deployment platforms — Self-Managed, Dedicated, Dedicated for Government, and GitLab.com. Today, developers routinely discover platform compatibility issues late in development, triggering costly rework, delays, and emergency escalations. The Platform Readiness team is fixing this by embedding platform readiness intelligence directly into GitLab's software development lifecycle.
The Role
As an Intermediate Backend Engineer on this newly established team within Developer Experience, you'll build the systems that let features ship cleanly across all platforms — working on agentic workflow components and evolving the platform requirements knowledge base. This is a growth role: you'll learn agentic workflows, requirements schema, and integration surfaces from the engineers and leadership around you while working on concrete, high-impact problems.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain agentic workflow components on the Duo Agent Platform: contribute to the Core Agentic Workflow (DAP flow) and the Requirements Agent; write tests, documentation, and evaluations for agent behavior
- Evolve the platform requirements knowledge base: add requirements, improve the schema, and sharpen validation tooling; translate platform teams' expertise into structured requirements
- Build integration surfaces so feature teams engage Platform Readiness where they already work — issues, merge requests, design docs, and CI/CD pipelines
- Collaborate with Infrastructure, Security, and Data teams to turn their expertise into reusable readiness artifacts
- Write clear documentation and evaluations that keep agent behavior trustworthy
What You Bring
- Solid backend engineering skills (Ruby/Rails or similar) with an interest in AI-driven systems
- Excitement for agentic workflows, LLM-powered tooling, and knowledge engineering
- Strong written communication — documentation is a first-class deliverable here
- Comfort working async across time zones in a fully remote company
Why GitLab
This is a rare chance to get in early on a brand-new team building AI-native developer tooling at one of the most transparent companies in tech — remote from anywhere in the US or Canada.
