Senior Backend Engineer — AI-Powered Automation that Kills Dev Friction at GitLab (Remote, US/Canada)

GitLab — the DevSecOps platform trusted by 50M+ users and half the Fortune 100 — is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer for the Nonlinear Productivity team. This is a greenfield, agentic-AI role: you'll find friction across the entire software development lifecycle and build reliable AI-powered automation that removes it for good.

The Problems You'll Tackle

• Cutting code review time in half with agentic solutions — while keeping a human in the loop
• Turning manual, error-prone release steps into agentic workflows that catch their own mistakes
• Diagnosing long review cycles, brittle automation, and broken tooling wherever they live

What You'll Do

• Scope agentic solutions to vague pain points, turning them into concrete, buildable proposals
• Design AI systems that follow step-by-step workflows, use tools and safety checks, and correct errors before taking engineering action
• Build evaluation tooling that judges agent output on correctness, constraint compliance, and cost — not on whether it merely "seems to work"
• Apply distributed-systems judgment to catch generated code that would fail under concurrency or at scale
• Collaborate with GitLab's India-based group, sharing roadmaps and reusable agent tooling

What You'll Bring

• Hands-on experience building agentic or LLM-based systems in production — multi-step orchestration, tool use, guardrails, recovery patterns
• Strong distributed systems knowledge: coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, failure modes
• Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python (in that order of priority)
• A track record of working autonomously in unfamiliar codebases and driving solutions to completion
