About the Opportunity
Cambridge Consultants' Human-Machine Understanding (HMU) group is seeking a Senior Human-Centric AI Engineer to work at the intersection of AI, cognitive science, and human-machine interaction. This is a high-autonomy role where you'll shape the next generation of intuitive interactive technologies, from robotics and automation to AI coaches in sports and healthcare.
The Role & Impact
As part of the Intelligent Services business, you'll take ownership of the technical realization of our HMU framework. This involves multi-modal human sensing, contextual modelling, and agentic workflows that proactively support human users. You'll translate insights from psychology, affective computing, and cognitive robotics into robust, real-world AI pipelines.
Key Focus Areas
- Deliver client projects, from designing human subjects' studies to developing novel interfaces and interaction paradigms.
- Conduct technical research to push the boundaries of human-machine understanding and build prototypes.
- Identify opportunities to apply HMU across diverse markets and showcase leadership through demos.
- Collaborate with colleagues to turn technical insights into compelling narratives and functional systems.
Required Experience
- Excellent degree or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Cognitive Science, Psychology, or related field with computational modelling or AI emphasis.
- High proficiency in Python and AI/ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch); comfortable building complex real-time systems.
- Experience with human subject research: protocol design, experiments, data analysis, and synthesis. Ethics committee experience is valued.
- Ability to work independently, drive curiosity, and build prototypes.
Desired Skills
- Experience with HRI/HCI systems: cognitive architectures, multi-modal perception, affective computing.
- Familiarity with agentic AI workflows, knowledge graphs, and state-machine architectures.
- Publications in relevant venues (ICRA, IROS, HRI, NeurIPS, ICML) or journals (IEEE Transactions).
- Development for distributed real-time systems or robotics (e.g., ROS2).
Perks & Compensation
- High-autonomy role with mentoring and tailored career development.
- Opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects with leading clients.
- Some roles require Security Check clearance; must be eligible to work in the UK.
