Staff Backend Engineer (Ruby) — Set the Technical Direction for GitLab's Duo Agent Platform (Remote)
GitLab's Duo Agent Platform (DAP) is how the company delivers AI-powered automation on customer repositories — and the DAP Repository Flows team is looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to set its technical direction. If you're a staff-level Ruby engineer who wants to shape how autonomous agents work on real codebases, this is a rare opportunity.
The Territory
The team owns two critical areas: DAP onboarding (getting customers set up and productive with minimal friction) and repository & background flows (autonomous and scheduled agents that work on a customer's codebase on their behalf). As Staff, you'll drive complex initiatives across team boundaries and raise the engineering bar for agentic experiences.
What You'll Own
- Architecture decisions that shape how onboarding and repository/background flows are built
- The design and delivery of autonomous agents operating on customer codebases
- Mentorship of senior and intermediate engineers — reviewing designs and code, elevating technical quality
- Cross-team alignment on interfaces, shared patterns, and platform capabilities across the DAP organization
- The hardest technical problems the team faces, and preventing them where possible through sound design
What We're Looking For
- Deep, hands-on Ruby and Ruby on Rails experience in production systems
- Demonstrated experience integrating LLMs into products (product integration, not ML training)
- Experience building agentic systems — autonomous agents that take actions on a user's behalf
- A record of shipping complex, high-scale systems and driving technical direction across teams
- The judgment and influence expected of staff level: setting direction, unblocking others, multiplying impact
